Time is getting closer

Plants have been ordered.  There's a pretty limited availability to start off with since I'm trying to start this on a limited budget, but more will come as time goes on.

Now, I just have to get pots and potting medium ready to go for when the plants get here.

Lots to do and sometimes it feels like there's not going to beenough time to do it.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

So many to make.  Like what do I call the business?  Do I do wholesale or retail?  What do I sell?  Where do I buy from?  And on and on.

I recruited help from the family for the first one, and it was decide to name our nursery Noah's Plant Haven.
Not sure what will happen when we have another child.  Guess I'll have to start another division or something.

I thought about mostly selling wholesale but have leaned away from that and more toward retail.

As to what I will be selling, I'm dealing mostly in landscape plants such as woody ornamentals.  Things like burning bush, forsythia, hydrangea, etc.  I will also have a few trees at some point.

However, I am always open to suggestions for things anyone would like to see me carry.  Please comment below.  I hope to have a separate section for this to the side at some point.

You want to start a what?

So why start a nursery?  Is it something I've always wanted to do or have lots of experience in from working at one?  Not really.

Along with some other things my family is doing, I started thinking about starting some kind of business to help us achieve our goals.  I've been reading lots of books on leadership and business for my personal development and wanted to apply some of the things I have learned.  Originally, I had been thinking about a landscaping business since from my view it seemed pretty easy to get started in.

Then, I ran across some information about starting your own backyard nursery.  I started reading up on it and eventually purchased some more detailed information.  It seemed even easier and less intensive with greater returns than landscaping.  Piece of cake!

While I'm not entirely naive, I do plan to start out really small and grow the business (no pun intended, although there will probably be times that it is).  So, I'm hoping that it won't be like jumping with both feet into the boat only to realize someone moved the boat.

The idea is to start out with the leftover money from my wife's sales business which amounts to a little over $300.  I hope to build up to producing my own plants from stock rather than just reselling what I can buy from others.  This does mean that my selection will be small for a while, but all the better to ease into it.

While I'm filled with many ideas and ways to expand beyond just growing plants (including possibly that landscaping I mentioned earlier), that will be the main focus for now.  Rest assured, however, that I will not be growing dandelions like the background image of this blog shows.  While I'm confident in my ability to produce them in large quantities, I'm not so sure about the resell value.  Unless I create some dandelion wine, but that takes a different business license.

Start of the Journey

Well, not really the start of the whole journey, but the start of this next step.

A couple of months ago, I decided to start a nursery business.  Nothing large just a "backyard" nursery.  More on that later, though.  I've come to the point of the process where I've decided to start this blog to chronicle the journey and hopefully connect with customers.  I should have began at the time I decided to open the nursery since so much has gone on in that short amount of time.  Nevertheless, here we are now.

And now, since it's 2:30 in the morning, I'm going to bed.  I'll fill you in on all the details later.

Thanks for reading!
