You want to start a what?

So why start a nursery?  Is it something I've always wanted to do or have lots of experience in from working at one?  Not really.

Along with some other things my family is doing, I started thinking about starting some kind of business to help us achieve our goals.  I've been reading lots of books on leadership and business for my personal development and wanted to apply some of the things I have learned.  Originally, I had been thinking about a landscaping business since from my view it seemed pretty easy to get started in.

Then, I ran across some information about starting your own backyard nursery.  I started reading up on it and eventually purchased some more detailed information.  It seemed even easier and less intensive with greater returns than landscaping.  Piece of cake!

While I'm not entirely naive, I do plan to start out really small and grow the business (no pun intended, although there will probably be times that it is).  So, I'm hoping that it won't be like jumping with both feet into the boat only to realize someone moved the boat.

The idea is to start out with the leftover money from my wife's sales business which amounts to a little over $300.  I hope to build up to producing my own plants from stock rather than just reselling what I can buy from others.  This does mean that my selection will be small for a while, but all the better to ease into it.

While I'm filled with many ideas and ways to expand beyond just growing plants (including possibly that landscaping I mentioned earlier), that will be the main focus for now.  Rest assured, however, that I will not be growing dandelions like the background image of this blog shows.  While I'm confident in my ability to produce them in large quantities, I'm not so sure about the resell value.  Unless I create some dandelion wine, but that takes a different business license.

  1. LOL, babe! I agree that we should shy away from the dandelion business. Too much competition.
